“After the Archive?” talk series sets out to make inquiries about the role of archives in public memory since 2016. Hosted by Yapı Kredi Kültür Sanat, the third season of the series inaugurates with archaeologist and historian Saadet Özen who will elaborate on how her collecting and archiving practices intersect with and differ from each other. Özen’s talk Critique of Criticism About Nostalgia will discuss the desire to look at and contemplate old images and investigate how they are often decontextualized and recontextualized in social media impacting public memory.

 

About Saadet Özen:

Saadet Özen studied at Notre Dame de Sion French School for Girls and graduated from Archeology and Art History department at Istanbul University. She received her MA degree in the History Department of Boğaziçi University, Istanbul with her thesis on the films and photographs taken by Manaki Brothers during the Young Turk Revolution. Özen works as an independent researcher in the fields of political imagery in the Ottoman Era and history of tourism. Her publications include 150 Yılın Tanığı Notre Dame de Sion (2006) and ÇukulataÇikolatanın Yerli Tarihi (2014). Özen is currently pursuing her Ph.D. at EHESS, Paris.
